Dental anxiety is real and extremely common — surveys suggest that as many as one in three adults experience some degree of fear or avoidance related to dental care. At North Langley Family Dental, we believe that dental fear should never stand between you and the care you need. Our sedation dentistry options allow anxious patients in Langley, Walnut Grove, Willowbrook, Fort Langley, and across the Fraser Valley to receive dental treatment comfortably, calmly, and without distress.
Sedation dentistry is ideal for:
If you have been avoiding dental care because of fear or anxiety, sedation dentistry can change your experience completely.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative gas inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. It takes effect within minutes, producing a sense of relaxation and comfort while you remain fully conscious and able to respond to your dentist. The effects wear off completely within minutes of removing the mask — you can drive yourself home after a nitrous oxide appointment.
Nitrous oxide is our most commonly used sedation option and is safe for adults and children. It is ideal for patients with mild to moderate anxiety.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed anti-anxiety medication (typically a benzodiazepine such as triazolam) one hour before your appointment. The medication produces a deeper state of relaxation — many patients feel drowsy and may not remember much of the appointment. You remain conscious and can respond to questions, but you will feel very calm and comfortable.
Because the medication takes time to wear off, you must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment and stay with you for several hours afterward.
Sedation options offered at dental offices are well-established and safe when administered by trained professionals. Before recommending sedation, we review your complete medical history and medication list to ensure suitability. Your vital signs and comfort are monitored throughout the appointment.
Before your appointment, we will provide you with specific pre-appointment instructions depending on the type of sedation used. For nitrous oxide, no special preparation is required. For oral sedation, you will need to arrange transportation, avoid food and drink for a specified period before the appointment, and have someone with you afterward.
During your appointment, we ensure you are comfortable throughout and proceed at a pace that works for you. Many sedation patients are surprised by how relaxed and positive the experience is compared to their expectations.
We welcome anxious patients from Langley, Walnut Grove, Willowbrook, Fort Langley, Brookswood, Aldergrove, Maple Ridge, and Abbotsford. Your comfort is our priority.
